Red Light Therapy at UTB

PlatinumLED BIOMAX

Red light therapy (RLT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light, particularly in the red and near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, to enhance cellular function. When this light is absorbed by the skin, it stimulates the mitochondria—often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell—to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is essential for cellular energy and repair. This process supports tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and improves blood circulation, which can aid in pain relief, skin rejuvenation, and accelerated healing.

The BIOMAX series from PlatinumLED uses R+ and NIR+ wavelengths that are optimized for therapeutic benefit. These panels emit light at several wavelengths (480nm, 630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 830nm, 850nm, and 1060nm), which target various health and cosmetic issues, such as acne, fine lines, joint pain, and muscle recovery. PlatinumLED emphasizes that the therapeutic effects depend on precise calibration of light intensity and duration—typically 15 to 20 minutes per session, ensuring maximum skin exposure for effective results.

What are Some Benefits of Red Light and NIR Therapy?

Near-infrared (NIR) and red light therapy offer a range of health and wellness benefits by using specific wavelengths of light to penetrate skin and tissue. Here’s a breakdown of their primary benefits:

  1. Skin Health and Anti-Aging: Red light therapy (usually in the range of 630-660nm) boosts collagen and elastin production, which improves skin elasticity, reduces wrinkles, and smooths fine lines. Regular sessions can enhance skin tone and texture and address skin issues like sun damage, pigmentation, and acne scars
  2. Pain Relief and Reduced Inflammation: NIR light, which penetrates more deeply than red light, can reach muscles and joints, reducing inflammation and pain. This is especially helpful for conditions like arthritis, tendonitis, and sports injuries, where inflammation is a key issue
  3. Improved Muscle Recovery and Athletic Performance: Both red and NIR light enhance circulation and oxygen delivery to tissues, speeding up muscle recovery and reducing soreness post-exercise. This improvement in circulation also helps to deliver nutrients more efficiently to cells, promoting faster tissue repair
  4. Wound Healing: By stimulating cellular repair processes, red light therapy is also known to accelerate wound healing. Studies have shown it can improve recovery times for various injuries, including burns, cuts, and surgical wounds, making it a popular tool for physical therapy and recovery practices
  5. Enhanced Cellular Energy: Both NIR and red light are absorbed by mitochondria, the energy centers of cells, boosting ATP production (the cellular energy molecule). This effect helps cells perform optimally, whether for routine functions or repairing damage caused by aging and stress
  6. Improved Mental Health and Sleep: There’s growing evidence that NIR light can have a positive effect on mood regulation by promoting neurogenesis (formation of new brain cells) and supporting brain health. It may also influence sleep patterns by positively affecting melatonin production and regulating circadian rhythm

The combination of red and NIR light can be a powerful therapy for general wellness, supporting everything from skin health and muscle recovery to inflammation reduction and enhanced energy. For More information on our brand of red light, check out the PlatinumLED Therapy Lights Website

These benefits are presented for reference purposes only and no implication of red light therapy creating a cure for or treating any disease is implied nor should it be inferred. If you have a health condition, are taking prescription drugs, or have acute joint injuries, please consult your physician before starting red light therapy. Persons with surgical implants (metal pins and rods, artificial joints, silicone, or other types of surgical implants) typically do not experience any adverse effects, but should also consult their physician or surgeon before starting red light therapy.

Tips for Use

  • Distance from Panel: Closer proximity (6-12 inches) typically provides more intense light exposure, suitable for deep-tissue benefits, while distances up to 18 inches may work better for general wellness and skin support.
  • Session Time and Frequency: Adapting session times based on individual tolerance can prevent skin irritation. Starting with lower frequencies and shorter times, especially for sensitive skin, is advisable.
  • Eye Protection: Consider using protective eyewear, especially when targeting facial areas, as the light can be intense.

FAQ's About Red Light Therapy:

Is red light therapy safe, and are there any side effects?

Yes, red light therapy is generally safe and well-tolerated, with no reported significant side effects. Because it is non-invasive and does not use UV light, it does not damage the skin. However, prolonged exposure may cause temporary skin irritation, so it’s important to follow recommended usage guidelines.

Set up, clean up, preference management, and scheduling fall within their responsibilities. Gratuity is not included in rates nor expected, but is always appreciated by your technician.

Do I need to wear eye protection during sessions?

Although red light therapy does not emit harmful UV rays, the brightness of the LED lights may cause discomfort. It’s advisable to wear protective eyewear or keep eyes closed if treating facial areas, especially when in close proximity to the panel.

How long will it take to feel results?

Results vary depending on the individual and treatment goals. Some people notice improvements immediately after a massage and red light therapy in conjunction in the short term and longer with more frequent use. For wound healing, pain relief, and inflammation benefits typically are noticed after 3-4 consistent sessions.

What conditions can red light therapy help treat?

Red light therapy has been shown to help with various conditions, including arthritis, muscle soreness, joint pain, acne, eczema, and even mood-related issues by stimulating neurogenesis. It can also support general wellness by enhancing cellular function and blood circulation

Is it okay to bring my phone or tablet to read while I am doing red light therapy?

We advise using the time to unplug and center. Enjoy the dark peaceful room and calming music our clinic provides and allow your body to get into a parasympathetic state where healing is able to occur. Scrolling on social media may keep your nervous system in a more sympathetic state and minimize ability to receive maximum benefit of the red light.

Who should avoid red light therapy?

  • If you’re using skincare products with ingredients like retinol, AHAs, or any medication that makes your skin light-sensitive, it’s best to avoid them before your session, as red light can increase sensitivity.
  • If you have active skin cancer or a history of melanoma, consult with a healthcare professional before using RLT. While red light does not contain UV radiation, there is limited research on its effects on cancerous cells, so caution is advised.
  • Conditions like lupus or porphyria, which worsen with light exposure, may be irritated by RLT. These individuals should avoid or carefully evaluate red light therapy with their doctor.
  • Although RLT can aid in recovery, it may not be suitable immediately following surgery or for acute injuries, where inflammation is still very high. Waiting for the initial recovery phase to pass may be more beneficial.
  • Those with conditions that increase light sensitivity (photosensitivity) or who are taking medications that make the skin more sensitive to light (e.g., certain antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, or Accutane) may experience adverse reactions. It's best to avoid RLT or seek medical advice if you are photosensitive.
  • Although some studies indicate that RLT is safe during pregnancy, many providers recommend caution as research is still ongoing. Pregnant or nursing individuals should consult with their healthcare provider before starting RLT.
